Electronic Commerce
Electronic commerce is transforming the economic landscape. Business to business purchases are growing at the fastest rate, but business to consumer sales are skyrocketing as well. All over the world, companies are realizing the benefits of using the Internet to sell their goods and services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

To illustrate the growth of e-commerce, here are a few examples of how the Internet is impacting businesses:

  • At the start of 1997, Dell Computers was making $1 million in sales from its web site every day, but by the end of the year the company was selling $3 million worth of goods each day from its site.
  • W.W. Grainger (a leading wholesaler of manufacturing supplies in North America) has seen the revenues from its web site grow 100 percent quarter over quarter.
  • In 1996, Amazon.com sold about $16 million worth of books from its web site. Then in 1997, Amazon's revenues rose to $148 million. Now, for the fourth quarter of 2000, Amazon sold nearly $1 billion worth of goods on its web site.
These are but a few examples of the success stories and popularity of electronic commerce.

Electronic commerce reduces the cost of many transactions, while making it more convenient and efficient for the buyer and seller. As time goes on, electronic commerce will continue to grow because it is more cost-effective, convenient, and informational.
